Mental Health Resources

WHAT IS TRAUMA?

Trauma is a pervasive problem. It results from exposure to an event or series of events that are emotionally disturbing or life-threatening, and affect a person’s functioning and well-being.

Experiences that may be traumatic include:

  • Domestic abuse

  • Childhood neglect

  • Living with a family member with mental health or substance abuse

  • Sudden separation from a loved one

  • Poverty

  • Racism, discrimination, and oppression

  • Community violence

The impact of trauma extends beyond the individual. Community trauma & violence can prevent people from meeting their basic needs. The result is high levels of trauma across the population and a breakdown of positive social relationships/norms across the community.
